THE CONGREGATION — the community of Israel as a body, from a root meaning to appoint or meet by arrangement (the same root as mo'ed, an appointed time, and ohel mo'ed, the tent of meeting). Distinct from qahal, the assembly actually convened; this translation keeps the two apart everywhere, so Leviticus 4:13 can hide a matter 'from the eyes of the assembly' while Numbers 15:24 hides it 'from the eyes of the congregation' — the same idiom with the nouns swapped, which is invisible if both are levelled to 'community'. ⚠ It is also the word Korah weaponises: 'the whole edah, all of them, are holy' (Numbers 16:3) is a quotation of Leviticus 19:2, addressed to the same body — the rebellion argues from the law rather than against it. → first discussed at Num 16:3
