FOR NOTHING, gratis — the accusative of dōrea, a gift, used as an adverb. ⚠ It occurs fourteen times in the New Testament, and outside one verse it is the vocabulary of grace: 'justified FREELY by his grace' (Romans 3:24), 'let him take the water of life FREELY' (Revelation 22:17), 'FREELY you received, FREELY give' (Matthew 10:8). The exception is John 15:25, quoting Psalm 35:19 / 69:4: 'they hated me dōrean' — the same gratuitousness pointed the other way, hatred given away for no reason. KJV and ASV print 'without a cause', NIV 'without reason'; all are accurate and none can show a reader the other fourteen. → first discussed at John 15:25
