DOUBLE-SOULED, of two minds — di-, 'twice', + psychē, 'soul': a person with two inner centres, half-turned to God and half to the world. ⚠ The word appears nowhere in Greek before James (1:8; 4:8) and is very likely his own coinage; it names the spiritual condition the whole letter is written against — the divided heart whose prayer is like a wind-tossed wave (1:6-8), 'unstable in all his ways'. The KJV made it the now-proverbial 'double minded'. It caught on fast in the early church — the Shepherd of Hermas and 1-2 Clement use it constantly, apparently borrowing it from James, a small sign of the letter's early currency. → first discussed at James 1:8
