dever דֶּבֶר dever

Pestilence — the third leg of Jeremiah's drumbeat triad, SWORD–FAMINE–PESTILENCE, which tolls through the book from 21:7 on (some fifteen times). The same word names the Exodus cattle-plague; in the siege oracles it is the death that needs no army. It appears twice in Psalm 91 (vv3, 6), once as the pestilence a man is snatched from and once as the one that 'walks in the dark' — the second of the psalm's four terrors set out on a clock. → first discussed at Jer 21:6
