LIBERTY, release — 'you shall proclaim DEROR throughout the land to all its inhabitants' (25:10), the phrase cast in 1752 onto Pennsylvania's State House bell, now the Liberty Bell, in the King James Version's own wording. Elsewhere the word names a swallow or sparrow (Psalm 84:3, not yet on these pages) — a small bird free to come and go — and some readers connect the two senses, liberty as a kind of unhindered flight.
