A STANDARD — the banner each of the four camp-divisions marches and camps under (2:2-34), one per compass direction, visible from a distance before a single tent goes up. The word itself specifies no color or emblem; Numbers names each standard only by its tribe (Judah's standard, Reuben's standard), never by any image on it. Later rabbinic tradition (Numbers Rabbah 2:10, well outside this book) filled that silence in, assigning each of the four a symbolic creature — a tradition some readers connect to the four living creatures of Ezekiel 1 and Revelation 4, though neither text ever states the link itself.
