TO BE SHATTERED, dismayed, broken with terror. In Jeremiah's charge it is a warning built on a pun: 'do not be SHATTERED (chatat) before them, lest I SHATTER (achittekha) you before them' (1:17) — fear the people and God himself will break you; the only safety is obedience.
