'BRIDEGROOM (or son-in-law) OF BLOOD' — the cryptic phrase Zipporah speaks at the terrifying night-lodging scene, cutting off her son's foreskin with a flint and touching it to 'his feet': 'surely you are a CHATAN DAMIM to me' (4:25-26). ⚠️ One of the most obscure expressions in the Hebrew Bible: chatan is 'bridegroom / son-in-law' (from the root for marriage-by-blood-tie), damim is 'blood' (plural, often of bloodshed); who is addressed, and what the phrase means, are genuinely uncertain.
