chashaq חָשַׁק chashaq

To be ATTACHED to, to cling, to be bound by desire. Used of Shechem's longing for Dinah and, startlingly, of God's own inexplicable attachment to Israel ('YHVH did not chashaq you because you were more numerous,' Deuteronomy 7:7). Psalm 91:14 gives the reason God acts, and it is this verb rather than obedience or faith: 'because he has bound himself to me.' Warmer and more physical than the shelf's 'set his love upon me.' → first discussed at Psalms 91:14
