A PROFANED WOMAN — from chalal, 'to profane, pierce, defile,' the same root behind chillel, 'to profane' (a name, the sabbath, God's own holiness) throughout Leviticus. A priest may not marry one (21:7), and the high priest may not marry one even in addition to being unable to marry a widow (21:14) — the term names a woman disqualified by a prior sexual history or (per later rabbinic reading) born of a union the priesthood itself forbids, not a moral judgment on the woman herself so much as a status that would compromise the priestly line's own required purity. The identical root gives this chapter its other central case: a priest's daughter who 'profanes herself' by prostitution 'profanes her father' (21:9) — the same verb running from a woman's own status to the man whose office her conduct compromises. → first discussed at Lev 21:7
