brit בְּרִית brit

Covenant. First promised at 6:18, first enacted (with all flesh, unconditionally) in Genesis 9 — the word that structures the rest of the Bible. ⭐ The ordinary idiom for making one is karat brit, to CUT a covenant. Deuteronomy 5:2 has the one cut at Horeb, and 28:69 (both now on these pages; 29:1 in English numbering) names a second, cut in the land of Moab besides the covenant that he made with them at Horeb — and calls the fifty-four verses of curse before it the words of the covenant. → first discussed at Gen 6:18
