binah בִּינָה binah

UNDERSTANDING — from bin, 'to separate, to discern BETWEEN': the faculty that tells one thing from another, true from false, this road from that. Not the same as knowledge (da'at, what you know) but the power to DISCERN it — comprehension by distinguishing. Its close sibling tevunah, 'discernment' (from the same root), enters at Proverbs 2:3 and 3:19; binah is 'understanding,' tevunah the applied 'discernment.' → first discussed at Gen 1:2
