GUILT, iniquity — from a root meaning to bend or twist; the heaviest of the Hebrew words for wrongdoing, naming not a single act but the crookedness a person carries, and the liability that comes with it. It is the word in Judah's extraordinary answer when the cup is found in Benjamin's bag: 'God has found out the AVON of your servants' (44:16). They are innocent of the theft and Judah knows it — he is confessing something else entirely, twenty-two years old, to the one man in the room who knows exactly what he means.
