asham אָשָם asham

GUILT, and by extension the GUILT-OFFERING that answers it — the reparation sacrifice of Leviticus 5, which uniquely among the offerings involved paying restitution as well as killing an animal. Isaiah 53:10 makes the servant's life an asham, which is a legal-restitution image rather than a purely cultic one: something owed is being paid back, not merely covered. → first discussed at Isaiah 53:10
