A rare and much-debated compound — arsēn, 'male', + koitē, 'bed, a lying-down' — whose two halves stand together in the Greek of Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13 (arsenos… koitēn, 'the lying of a male'), so it was very probably minted from that text. ⚠ It is all but unattested before Paul (1 Corinthians 6:9; 1 Timothy 1:10), which leaves its precise reference genuinely uncertain, and its rendering has ranged widely across the centuries — KJV 'abusers of themselves with mankind', ASV the same, NIV 'those practicing homosexuality', NWT 'men who lie with men'. ⚠ At 1 Timothy 1:10 it stands next to andrapodistēs, 'slave-dealer, kidnapper', and some argue the setting tilts it toward exploitation and coercion while others read the items as separate.
