LOCUST — from a root meaning to be many, so the name is the swarm. The eighth plague (Exodus 10:4-19), and afterward the Bible's standing image of unstoppable devastation and of armies: Judges 6:5 has Midian coming up 'like locusts for multitude,' and Joel builds a whole book out of a locust invasion read as the day of Jehovah. ⚠️ The plague is delivered by ordinary weather — an east wind brings the swarm in, a strong sea wind carries it out — which is the pattern of most of the plagues: not impossible events so much as announced ones.
