The FLOCK-MARKINGS at the heart of Jacob's wage-deal, kept distinct: aqod 'streaked / banded,' naqod 'speckled' (small spots), talu 'spotted / patched' (large blotches), and chum 'dark, brown.' In a flock of white sheep and dark goats these off-colored animals are the odd minority — which is exactly why Jacob asks for them as his wages (30:32-43): a bargain that looks generous to Laban and becomes, through Jacob's peeled rods and selective breeding, a fortune.
