The HEEL — Jacob is born gripping Esau's aqev, 'and his name was called Ya'aqov' (25:26), 'heel-holder.' The name turns into a verb of treachery: 'is he not rightly named Ya'aqov (Jacob)? He has SUPPLANTED me (ya'aqveni) these two times' (27:36) — to grab the heel is to trip, to overreach, to supplant. And it is the very word of the first promise-and-curse: 'he will strike your head, and you will strike his HEEL' (3:15).
