REDEMPTION — release secured by a ransom (lytron), the price paid to free a prisoner of war or to buy a slave out of ownership. It was a transaction any Corinthian had watched happen; the sacral manumission inscriptions at Delphi, a short journey away, record slaves 'sold' to a god so as to go free.
