TO GIVE BACK — apo ('back, away from') + didōmi ('to give'): to render, repay, return what is owed or what belongs to another. ⚠ The prefix is the entire argument of Matthew 22:21. Jesus does not say 'give' to Caesar; he says APODOTE, give back — because the coin already carries Caesar's face, so handing it over returns his own property to him. KJV's 'Render therefore unto Caesar' has the prefix exactly; NIV's 'give to Caesar' loses it, and with it the logic. The same verb runs the settling of accounts in the parable of the talents-debtor (18:25-34, 'repay what you owe') and the wages at the vineyard (20:8). ⚠ Note what the saying does NOT specify: how much belongs to Caesar.
