RADIANCE, effulgence — the shining-out of a light, the beam thrown from its source; apo, 'from', + augē, 'brightness, a ray'. ⚠ It occurs only once in the New Testament, at Hebrews 1:3, of the Son as 'the apaugasma of God's glory'. It can be read actively (the Son shines with the Father's own light) or passively (a reflection cast back), and Greek allows both; either way the point is that a light and its radiance are inseparable — there is no sun without its shining. The word already described divine Wisdom in the Greek of Wisdom 7:26 ('a radiance of eternal light'), and the fourth-century creeds reached for the same picture — 'Light from Light' — to say the Son is of one being with the Father.
