To BEGET AGAIN, to give NEW BIRTH — ana, 'again', + gennaō, 'to beget, bear'. ⚠ It is the great word of 1 Peter, framing chapter 1: God 'gave us new birth (anagennēsas) into a living hope' (1:3), and believers are 'born again (anagegennēmenoi), not of perishable seed but imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God' (1:23). It is Peter's term for what John records as Jesus' 'you must be born again' (John 3:3) — the same reality, a life begun over from a new source.
