A VINE. ⚠ The Synoptics use the word only in one phrase — 'the fruit of the vine', at the last supper (Matthew 26:29, Mark 14:25, Luke 22:18). John's account of that supper has no cup at all; what it has instead is Jesus saying 'I AM the vine' (15:1, 15:5). Israel is the vine all through the prophets — Psalm 80, Isaiah 5, Jeremiah 2, Hosea 10 — and in every one of those passages the vine fails. Which is what the adjective in 15:1 is for: not the honest vine, the REAL one. → first discussed at John 15:1
