PILLAR OF CLOUD — with its night form the pillar of fire, the visible presence that goes ahead of Israel from the moment they leave Egypt: 'the pillar of cloud did not depart by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from before the people' (Exodus 13:21-22). ⚠️ It is not a map. It is a presence that moves and is followed, and it sets the pattern for the rest of the Torah: it stands between Israel and Egypt at the sea (14:19-20), descends at the tent of meeting where God speaks with Moses 'face to face' (33:9-11), and finally fills the finished tabernacle so that Israel travels only when it lifts (40:34-38; Numbers 9:15-23).
