alalētos ἀλάλητος alalētos

UNSPEAKABLE — a privative: alpha-negative plus the root of laleo, to speak. So the groanings of Romans 8:26 are not merely unspoken but un-speak-able. Whether that means wordless (the Spirit groans without language) or inexpressible (the groaning cannot be put into any language) is a real question the Greek does not settle. The KJV's 'which cannot be uttered' is a good literal attempt. A New Testament hapax. → first discussed at Rom 8:26
