THE HIGHEST-CORNER-STONE — a rare architectural compound, and scholars of ancient building genuinely disagree on which stone it names: the foundation stone laid first, at the corner, that fixes the alignment of two walls; or the capstone that completes an arch or gable at the top, the last stone set rather than the first. ⚠ Both readings reach back to the same source text, 'the stone the builders rejected has become the head of the corner' (Psalm 118:22), requoted of Christ again at 1 Peter 2:6-7.
