BELOVED — the adjective in the voice at the baptism, 'this is my beloved Son' (Matthew 3:17). ⚠ Its overtone is Isaac. Where the Hebrew of Genesis 22:2 says 'your son, your ONLY one, whom you love' (yachid, only), the Greek Old Testament renders it ton agapēton, 'your beloved son' — so in Greek the words 'beloved son' carry the Aqedah with them, the son a father takes up a mountain. The voice at the Jordan combines it with Psalm 2:7 ('you are my son') and Isaiah 42:1 ('my chosen, in whom my soul delights'), whose very next clause is 'I have put my spirit upon him' — which is what the dove has just done. → first discussed at Matt 3:17
