'BOOTHS' — the FIRST stop of the exodus, 'and the sons of Israel journeyed from Raamses to SUCCOTH' (Exodus 12:37; 13:20; Numbers 33:5-6). ⚠️ It is not the Succoth of Genesis 33:17, where Jacob built booths for his livestock: that one lies in the Jordan valley, some three hundred miles away and on the wrong side of a sea Israel has not yet crossed. 'Booths' was an ordinary place-name, and the Bible carries at least two. This Succoth is generally identified with Egyptian Tjeku, in the Wadi Tumilat of the eastern Nile Delta — commonly located at Tell el-Maskhuta — a day's march from the store-city district where Israel had been living. The location is reasoned from Egyptian records and the route, not certain; the map marks it approximately.
