Israel's last camp east of the Jordan and the setting of Numbers 25. The name means ACACIAS — the desert tree whose wood the tabernacle is built from throughout Exodus — so the place where Israel breaks its covenant is named after the timber the covenant's own sanctuary is made of. ⚠ Numbers 33:49 gives the fuller form Abel-shittim and places the camp along the Jordan; Joshua 2:1 has the spies sent to Jericho from here, and Micah 6:5 names it in one breath with Balak and Balaam, looking back on the whole episode from centuries later. It is where the wilderness ends: everything after it happens on the other side of the river.
