A town in the hill country of EPHRAIM, north of Bethel, that was Israel's central sanctuary through the whole period of the Judges: here the tabernacle and the ark of the covenant stood (Joshua 18:1), and here Israel came up to worship 'Jehovah of hosts' (1 Samuel 1:3). It is the setting of Hannah's vow and the boyhood of Samuel — and it falls when the ark is captured in battle (ch 4), a loss the prophet Jeremiah invokes as a warning to a later generation trusting in the Jerusalem temple: 'go to my place that was in Shiloh… and see what I did to it' (Jeremiah 7:12). ⚠️ Not to be confused with the disputed word 'Shiloh' of Genesis 49:10, a different Hebrew term.
