The Second Temple approximate

The temple these hands began — built on the platform of Solomon's ruined first temple on the eastern hill of Jerusalem, on the traditional Mount Moriah. Its foundation was laid soon after the return under Cyrus (Ezra 3), then sat untouched for some sixteen years until Haggai and Zechariah restarted the work in 520; it was finished in 516 BC (Ezra 6:15). It was smaller and plainer than Solomon's, and the old men who remembered the first wept at the sight (Ezra 3:12) — the grief Haggai answers with 'the latter glory of this house will be greater than the former' (2:9). This modest building stood, much altered, for nearly five centuries, until Herod the Great remade it on a vast scale and Rome burned it in AD 70. Only its western retaining wall survives.
