The second of the first three cities of refuge, assigned to the tribe of Gad (Deuteronomy 4:43). ⭐ This same town becomes, centuries later, one of the most fought-over cities in the divided kingdom — the site of Ahab's death (1 Kings 22) and Jehu's anointing (2 Kings 9), neither yet on these pages. ⚠ Its identification with Tell er-Rumeith is widely proposed but not certain.
