The third and last of Balak’s lookouts, ‘the top of Peor, that looks out over the face of the Jeshimon’ (Numbers 23:28). ⚠ At this point in the story it is simply a mountain with a view, and the chapter mentions it in a travel note and moves on. What it becomes is Baal-peor, the shrine where Israel does to itself, two chapters later, exactly what Balaam was hired and unable to do to it — and Numbers 31:16 lays that episode at Balaam’s door. The mountain and the god are not distinguished in the name: Baal Peor is ‘the lord of Peor’, the local deity of this summit. Its site is not certainly identified; it lay somewhere on the ridge north of Mount Nebo, above the Jordan valley.
