The land Moses flees to and shepherds in for forty years (Exodus 2:15) — home of the MIDIANITES, a people descended from Abraham through Keturah (Genesis 25:2), so distant kin to Israel. Their territory lay in northwest Arabia, east of the Gulf of Aqaba, spreading north into the Transjordan and the Sinai's edges — caravan-traders (it was Midianite/Ishmaelite traders who bought Joseph, Genesis 37:28). Here Moses marries into the household of the priest of Midian and, at Horeb/Sinai 'the mountain of God' at the desert's far side (Exodus 3:1), meets Jehovah in the burning bush. Later the relationship sours — Midian joins Moab to hire Balaam (Numbers 22–25) — but at the exodus it is Midian that shelters the deliverer and gives him a wife and a wise father-in-law.
Approximate. This is the loosest outline on the site, and it is drawn that way on purpose. Midian was a PEOPLE before it was ever a place — tent-dwelling herders and caravan traders whose range moved with their flocks and their routes, never a state with a frontier. What is shown is the traditional heartland in north-west Arabia (the Hejaz), east of the Gulf of Aqaba: the coast is real, and there are two genuine anchors inland — Al-Bad', identified with Madyan since antiquity (Ptolemy and Josephus both put a 'Madiana' on this coast), and Qurayyah, the oasis whose distinctive painted pottery archaeologists actually call Midianite Ware. Everything east of those is a guess at where desert stops being anyone's. And the Bible itself will not keep Midianites inside it: they raid deep into Canaan in Judges 6-8, camp beside Moab in Numbers 22, and Moses pastures his father-in-law's flock as far as Horeb. Read the shape as 'where Midian was at home,' not as a border.
