'The double' (from kaphal, 'to fold, to double') — the cave at the edge of Ephron the Hittite's field, facing Mamre at Hebron, that Abraham bought for 400 shekels of silver to bury Sarah (Genesis 23). It is the FIRST legally-held parcel of the Promised Land — the man promised the whole land owns, in his lifetime, one field with a grave in it. It becomes the patriarchal tomb: Abraham himself (25:9), Isaac and Rebekah, and Jacob and Leah (49:31; 50:13) are all laid here — the one place in Canaan that indisputably belonged to the patriarchs, its purchase witnessed at the city gate and recorded tree by tree. The massive stone enclosure Herod the Great built over the cave still stands at Hebron (the Cave of the Patriarchs / al-Haram al-Ibrahimi) — among the oldest continuously-venerated sites on earth, and sacred to Jews, Christians, and Muslims alike.
