Originally CYPRUS — the name is connected with Kition, the ancient city at modern Larnaca — and then, as the horizon widened, a general Hebrew word for a sea power coming from the west. Numbers 24:24 has ships from the coast of Kittim afflicting Asshur and Eber in the last and strangest of Balaam's oracles, with no named agent and no date. ⚠ Later writers applied the word to whoever the western sea power of their own moment was: Daniel 11:30 uses it of a fleet that turns Antiochus back, and the Dead Sea scrolls use it of ROME. The Living Bible simply prints 'Cyprus', deciding for its reader what every other version leaves as a name.
