Sihon’s capital, on the plateau north of the Arnon, and the subject of the taunt-ballad quoted at Numbers 21:27-30 — a poem celebrating Sihon’s conquest of Moab, which Israel repeats because it establishes who owned the land before Israel took it. ⚠ Some eight centuries later Jeremiah 48:45-46 sings the same lines again, almost word for word, as an oracle against Moab. ⚠ Excavation at Tell Hesban has found no substantial Late Bronze Age town, which is a real difficulty for placing Sihon’s city there; some archaeologists therefore look to Tell Jalul or Tell el-Umeiri nearby. The name itself survived on the site, which is why the identification is traditional.
