The district of the eastern NILE DELTA that Joseph gives his family to live in (45:10), and the address of Israel for the next four hundred years. Its qualifications are practical and the text says so: good pasture for flocks and herds, and 'near to me' — close enough to the seat of government to be provisioned through five more years of famine. It is also, crucially, at the EDGE. Goshen sits in the Delta's eastern reach, toward Canaan and slightly outside Egypt proper, which is why a family of shepherds can settle there and stay a distinct people rather than being absorbed — and Genesis 46:34 makes the separation explicit and mutual: 'every shepherd is an abomination to Egypt.' ⚠️ The exact boundaries are not recoverable. The name is not Egyptian and appears in no Egyptian text; the identification with the Wadi Tumilat and the region around Tell el-Dab'a (ancient Avaris, a Semitic settlement in exactly this area in the Middle Bronze Age) is a reasonable inference from the biblical geography plus the archaeology, not a documented match. What the text is clear about is the shape of the story: the same ground that receives them as honoured guests of the vizier holds them as slaves in Exodus 1, and it is from here that they leave.

What can be reconstructed is a general area rather than a border: the Bible places it in the eastern Delta, on the road to Canaan (46:28-29), with pasture good enough for large flocks and near enough to the seat of government to be provisioned through a famine. The Wadi Tumilat — the fertile east-west corridor running from the Delta toward the Bitter Lakes — fits all three, and Tell el-Dab'a at its north-west end was a genuine Semitic settlement in exactly this region in the Middle Bronze Age. The outline shown is that reasoning, not a documented frontier.
