THE HILL OF THE FORESKINS — the place, beside the camp at Gilgal, where Joshua circumcised the generation born in the wilderness before the first Passover in the land (Joshua 5:3, now on these pages). The name stands in one verse of the Hebrew Bible, and it is two ordinary words with the article, gibeat ha-araloth, named — Rashi says — for what was left on it. The shelf splits on whether to hear a name: the KJV, ASV and Geneva translate it, ‘the hill of the foreskins’; the NIV and NWT 1984 keep it as a name; the RV60 and NVI do half of each, «el collado de Aralot». The Greek Bible has both, ‘the place called Hill of the Foreskins,’ and later buries the flint knives with Joshua at Timnath-serah in two sentences the Hebrew does not have (Greek Joshua 21:42; 24:31). ⚠ No site has been identified; the coordinates point at the Gilgal camp east of Jericho, since the text puts the circumcision there and the camp stayed in its place until they revived (5:8).
