A great Canaanite city on the edge of the Shephelah, commanding the coast road and the road up to Jerusalem; Egyptian inscriptions name it long before Joshua. Its king, Horam, came to help Lachish and was struck down with all his people (Joshua 10:33, now on these pages), but the chapter does not say the city was taken, and Joshua 16:10 says the Canaanites of Gezer were never driven out. Pharaoh later captured and burned it and gave it as a dowry to his daughter, Solomon’s wife, and Solomon rebuilt it (1 Kings 9:15–17; none of these yet on these pages).
