The place on the Timnah road where Tamar sat veiled — and the site of one of the Bible's driest jokes. The Hebrew petach einayim is 'the entrance of Enaim,' a real town; but einayim is also the ordinary word for EYES, so the phrase reads simultaneously as 'the Opening of the Eyes.' She takes her seat at Eyes-Open, and the very next verse is 'he did not know that she was his daughter-in-law' (38:14-16). The KJV misses both, reading 'in an open place'; ASV and NIV recover the town. Its exact location is unknown — somewhere between Adullam and Timnah.
