'Spring of the kid' — a freshwater spring in the cliffs on the WEST SHORE OF THE DEAD SEA, about 400 metres below sea level, which produces a sudden and improbable oasis in the most barren country in Israel: palms, reeds, waterfalls and, in antiquity, the balsam and perfume crops the place was famous for. Pliny and Josephus both single out its palm groves. It is where DAVID hid from Saul among the wild-goat rocks and cut the corner from his robe in the cave (1 Samuel 24), and it is where the Song puts its cluster of henna — the least likely garden in the country, named on purpose.
