⚠ Nahum's home town, and NObody knows where it is — which is why it has no pin on the atlas. Four traditions compete: (1) GALILEE — a tradition at least as old as Jerome, and the Galilean village CAPERNAUM literally means 'kefar Nahum,' the village of Nahum; (2) a place in southern Judah near Beit Guvrin; (3) somewhere in the tribe of Simeon; and (4) ALQOSH, a village on the Tigris a few miles north of Mosul — right beside Nineveh's own ruins — where a shrine traditionally called Nahum's tomb still stands, tended for centuries by the local Jewish and Assyrian-Christian communities. Each site has its advocates and none has real evidence; the Douay, from the Vulgate, calls Nahum 'the Elcesite.'
