A city of the Shephelah whose king, Debir, joined the coalition against Gibeon (Joshua 10:3, now on these pages). Joshua marched on it from Lachish and took it in a single day (10:34–35). The city is named nowhere outside the book of Joshua, and no contemporary text outside the Bible is known to name it. ⚠ Its site is disputed: most scholars now place it at Tel ‘Eton, south-east of Lachish; the older identification was Tell el-Hesi. The Septuagint reads Adullam in its place throughout Joshua 10. ⚠ Not to be confused with Eglon the king of Moab in Judges 3, whose name is spelled the same way in Hebrew.
