'The plain of Dura, in the province of Babylon' (3:1) — the field where Nebuchadnezzar sets up his golden image and where Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refuse to bow. ⚠ DURA (Akkadian duru, 'wall, fortress') was a common place-name across Babylonia, so the site is unidentified with any certainty; the leading candidate is a low mound south-southeast of Babylon still called Tulul Dura, surveyed in the nineteenth century, but no inscription ties it to Daniel's story, and the text gives no further landmark to fix it by. The narrator's one geographic anchor is simply 'in the province of Babylon' — see BABYLON.
