🗺️ Atlas

A district on the Sea of Galilee that Jesus crosses to after feeding the four thousand (Mark 8:10) — and one of the genuine blanks on the Gospel map. ⚠ The name occurs once in the New Testament and never again, and no site has been securely identified with it. Matthew's account of the same crossing lands instead at Magadan (Matthew 15:39, already on these pages), which is also a name that occurs exactly once and never again. Copyists found this as awkward as modern readers do, and at Matthew 15:39 the repair is on the record in the apparatus this translation reads: a later branch of manuscripts simply replaces the unknown Magadan with Magdala, a town that certainly existed. Mark's Dalmanutha is reported to have attracted the same treatment — Magdala, Melegada and other spellings — but no such variant appears in the apparatus this translation reads, so it is recorded here as reported rather than shown. The usual proposals put it on the western shore near Magdala, but the Gospel gives no detail beyond the boat and the direction, so this library records the district without placing a pin on it.

in the text Mark 8:10
📍 No fixed point plotted — the location is genuinely undetermined (see the note above), so this shows no guessed pin.
🗺️ No ancient-world overlay on the shelf yet for this site — a period map showing how the region actually looked in the biblical world gets added here as Mr. Librarian curates one, the same way the encyclopedia's film shelf grows.
▶ No films on the shelf yet — archaeology and geography videos get added here as Mr. Librarian finds good ones.
