A village on the south-eastern slope of the Mount of Olives, under two miles from Jerusalem on the road down to Jericho — close enough for Jesus to use it as a base at the end of each day during his final week rather than lodging inside the city itself. It is also where Lazarus, Martha and Mary lived (John 11, not yet on these pages) and where a woman anointed Jesus' head at the house of 'Simon the leper' (Mark 14:3, not yet on these pages). ⚠ Its modern Arabic name, al-'Ayzariyya, still preserves the memory — it derives from 'Lazarium', the place of Lazarus. Distinct from the Bethany 'across the Jordan' where John was baptizing (John 1:28, not yet on these pages) — the same place-name attached to two different villages a considerable distance apart.
