The high, well-watered volcanic plateau north-east of the Sea of Galilee — roughly today’s Golan and the Hauran — taken from Og at the end of Numbers 21. ⚠ Its reputation in the rest of the Bible is agricultural and slightly menacing: Bashan’s cattle and oaks are proverbial for being fat and strong, which is why Amos can call the women of Samaria ‘cows of Bashan’ (Amos 4:1) and mean something cutting rather than pastoral. Its boundaries are drawn approximately here; ancient sources describe a region, not a surveyed territory.
